Indian Wells, CA - World No. 1 and three-time Indian Wells champion Roger Federer, trying for his first title of 2008, ended a rare two-match losing skid with a resounding 6-3, 6-2 win over Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-3, 6-2 in second-round action Sunday at the $3.589 million Pacific Life Open -- the first ATP Masters Series event of the year.

Federer is 6-2 on the season, with an Australian Open semifinal loss to Novak Djokovic and an opening round loss on March 3 in Dubai to Andy Murray. The last time Federer lost three consecutive matches was the summer of 2002 when he lost four straight.

Fourth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko squeezed past towering American John Isner, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

Sixth-seeded American Andy Roddick lost, 6-4, 6-4 to Germany's Tommy Haas. It was the seventh victory in 10 all-time meetings for Haas over Roddick.

Seventh-seed Argentine David Nalbandian defeated Latvia's Ernests Gulbis, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4); and Murray, the 11th seed, rallied to top Austria's Jurgen Melzer, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

There was another upset as No. 12 seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile went down to Croatian wild card Mario Ancic, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
